FAQ’s for 2013

  • (edited)What time does registration/ athlete check in open? There will be pre registration on Saturday between 1-4. We will be just north of the boat launch ramps on the Harbor side. This will also be the last chance to register for the swim as there will not be race day registration. Day of registration/ athlete check in will start at 6:00 on the south side of the pier near the play structures.
  • Since the race is point to point how do I get my gear to the finish? As part of our effort to be green, we will have recycled mesh produce bags for each athlete to use to check their “dry gear” or you can use your own transition bag. We will then have it at the finish for you to pick up.
  • How do we get back to the start? The FREE shuttle buses run all day from the harbor to the Oceanside Transit center NOT the pier.
  • “Man it’s hot this weekend, is there day of registration?” We are anticipating selling out(written 9-24) so I would not wait to register.
  • What are the start times for the swims? The 2.4 mile swim starts at 7:30 with a cut off time of 2 hours and 2o minutes. The 1.2 mile swim starts at 8:00 and has the closure time of 9:50
  • Is the swim a mass start? Yes, but with a limited field, the start should be fairly easy. Remember, you can start as late as you would like to stay out of any scrum.
  • If we want to watch the 2.4 mile start how will we get to the finish? There will be shuttle buses leaving from the pier for spectators and volunteers.
  • Does the 1.2 mile swim start at the pier also? No, the 1.2 mile start is on the beach just north of the river mouth.
  • Do we have to walk to the 1.2 mile start? No, there will be two shuttles leaving the pier at 7:15. If you miss these, then you still don’t need to walk as you’ll need to run!!
  • Where does the swim finish? Both distances finish in the harbor at the top of the boat launch ramp, so you will need to run approximately 20 meters on a carpet surface.
  • Are there age group awards? Yes. We are doing ten year age groups with an award for the top 2 finishers in each age group for the 2.4 and top finisher only in the 1.2.
  • Is there a wetsuit division? Traditional or channel division? Yes there are separate divisions and separate awards.
  • Are there finisher medals? Yes. For 2013  we are doing finisher medals as well as custom TikiSwim3 trucker hats and handwoven leis for all finishers.
  • Are there overall winner awards? Oh yeah! We have amazing carved Tikis made in Bali.
  •  What about shirts or hoodies? We will have hoodies available for purchase but there will not be athlete t-shirts
  • How safe is the course? We have left the course safety to the sole discretion of the Oceanside Fire Department, Police and Lifeguards. There will be over 30 guards, patrol boats and pwcs. Additionally the course will be marked with numerous buoys as well as course escorts provided by the Oceanside Outrigger club. There too will be hydration and nutrition on the water for the 2.4 mile swimmers provided by Hammer Nutrition.
  • Is there surf? Yes, but only on the way out as both swims finish in the sheltered water of the harbor. Forecasted surf is 1-2 feet.
  • Will we be swimming against the current? What about the tide? There is the traditional “California current”  that runs south along the California coast, but this really should not come into play more importantly is the tide which will be going in to the harbor as the high tide peaks about 9:00, so most swimmers will get a “push” or at the least will be swimming the harbor during the slack period.
  • What’s the  water temperature for TikiSwim3? The  water temperature for the Oceanside Pier is forecasted to be in the 68-70 range according to Weather Underground.
  • What’s  the average air temperature? The forecasted high for TikiSwim3 is 80 degrees, so it should be perfect!!
  • Where should we park on race day? The best place to park is at or near the Oceanside Transit center as this is where the shuttle buses will be stopping. There will only be one early shuttle stop at the pier. If you are doing the 1.2 and picked up your packet early, you should park by the harbor.
  • Can my family/ friends use the shuttle? ABSOLUTELY. The FREE shuttle buses will be running from the transit center to the boat launch all day on Saturday and Sunday so stay and checkout everything happening at Harbor Days.
  • Do all athletes get a pancake breakfast after the race? Yes, but make sure you have your swim cap with you as this is what will be used as your “ticket”.
  • Is there a way to buy additional tickets for the breakfast? Yes. Additional breakfasts are available at the Oceanside Firefighters Association booth for a donation.
  • Are there things to do after the swim? YES!! As part of the Oceanside Harbor Days there will be 140+ vendor booths, food vendors, a beer garden and a great contest you can participate in called Nail and Sail.
  • Do you need volunteers? Absolutely and all volunteers will be given a custom Tiki Swim Cap, tiki mug and gift card. To volunteer, please send an email to volunteers@tikiswim.com
  • What type of volnteers do you need? We need setup and registration help the day of the race as well as help collecting and distributing athlete gear and “catchers” to help swimmers get settled on their feet coming out of the water.
